About this opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Consultant Economist to join our team in our Sydney practice, candidates based in Melbourne and Canberra will also be considered. We are looking for someone with formal qualifications and applied knowledge in economics, econometrics, finance, commerce or a similar quantitative field, who can take an analytic approach to providing policy advice. This role requires 4 to 5 years’ work experience in the private or public sector and experience leading a small-scale multidisciplinary team. Experience in project management, preparing high quality engaging reports, presentations, proposals for clients and understanding of the importance of communication, is essential.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will range from identifying the key issues in real-world problems, to forming hypotheses and critically analysing data, through to synthesising conclusions and recommendations. Highly desirable applicants are those who can demonstrate attention to detail, take pride in a high standard of work, and can apply problem-solving skills alongside their technical capabilities.

For this role, we seek applicants who are highly skilled in the use of MS Excel and have experience with one or more software packages commonly used for data analysis. Experience with financial appraisals and economic appraisals or cost benefit analysis is essential to the work. Additional experience in providing inputs to business cases seeking government funding will be highly regarded. Candidates will have the ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and manage with both technical and non-technical colleagues and clients - this is crucial to the role. Experience with the use of spatial data, and analysis of urban/city economics as it is a significant component of SGS’ work.

While based locally, you’ll work with clients across Australia and New Zealand and, on occasion, elsewhere internationally.
