Auckland City Council
Auckland City is the hub of the Auckland Region and New Zealand’s business centre. The vision for Auckland City’s long-term community plan is to be “The First City of the Pacific”, meaning Auckland City should offer a quality of life and economic opportunities that make it the first choice for people and businesses to live, invest in, and visit in the Pacific.
Auckland City commissioned a comprehensive understanding of Auckland’s performance in respect to the economy, education, health, well-being and overall quality of life to inform the development of a new District Plan for the Auckland Isthmus to guide and facilitate development over the next 10-15 years.
This study provided an independent assessment of Auckland’s performance on the international stage. This comprises the delivery of two key components of work. The first was a review and analysis of Auckland’s performance in existing city benchmarking indices and world ranking studies. The second was to analyse Auckland’s performance against a series of selected indicators and comparator cities. Importantly, this will form the basis of a performance monitoring framework, allowing for the longer-term tracking of performance against other international cities.
The links between overall performance and indicators are complex, and there is often no simple cause-and-effect relationship. While poor results relative to other cities on a particular indicator may signal the existence of a problem, ultimately, indicators are only a proxy and cannot be completely indicative of performance in specific dimensions. Indeed, the analysis highlights areas where further investigation is warranted.
