Client:

Auckland Regional Council

Location:

Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland has been uniquely shaped and constrained by the geographic environment and natural features.

While the city developed historically around the present-day Central Business District (CBD), infrastructure services and the dominance of motor vehicles as the preferred mode of transportation supported the city's expansion over the past century. Today, Auckland is characterised as a typical low-density, sprawling city.

SGS was engaged to provide strategic planning advice to inform the development of Auckland’s first Spatial Plan. We partnered with the Council to deliver a briefing paper with the primary objective of supporting councillors and staff's understanding of Auckland’s inherited development patterns, infrastructure constraints, and the strategic choices to shape the city’s future growth.

The work examined how the spatial and infrastructure characteristics have shaped the city’s development and highlighted opportunities to transition towards a more sustainable, compact urban form. SGS provided insight into the infrastructure investments, planning decisions, and policy directions needed to support this transition, contributing to a more connected, efficient, and liveable Auckland.
