Greater Cities Commission
The Central Coast is a key catalyst for economic growth, offering unique opportunities to drive innovation, attract talent, and support the development of emerging industries in food, health and integrated care.
SGS Economics and Planning partnered with the Greater Cities Commission to explore how the Central Coast can unlock its potential as a leading innovation hub, strategically positioned between the Greater Sydney and Newcastle markets.
On Darkinyung Country, the Central Coast has long been a meeting place for Aboriginal groups and is now home to many First Nations people. Historically known for its agricultural and industrial significance, the region thrives in food and beverage production, attracting people with its natural beauty and proximity to major markets.
Recent redevelopments, particularly in health and education, create opportunities to position the Central Coast as a food, health, and integrated care leader. Our work, delivered via a strong visual narrative, explored how the region can maximise these opportunities by:
- Profiling the Central Coast’s population, employment, and geographic characteristics.
- Identifying emerging industries with innovation potential and analysing broader trends that affect them.
- Recommending strategies to support the growth of the Central Coast Innovation District, including talent attraction, skills development, and knowledge sharing.
- Highlighting the importance of enhancing the region’s capacity to foster innovation and economic resilience.
