Australian purpose-driven companies are celebrating B Corp Month by fostering connections, encouraging collaborations and sharing how businesses can make the world a better place, amid a seven-fold growth in certified B Corps over the past five years.
SGS became a certified B Corp in 2017 following a rigorous assessment of our social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
When we first discovered the B Corp movement, we knew it was a perfect fit for our business. But we won't lie: B Corp certification is not easy. B Lab, the not for profit organisation which manages the B Corp certification process, assessed our operations against four criteria: workers, community, environment, and customers. We received our certification in 2017 but acknowledge that being a B Corp is a journey, not a destination. We are continuously looking for new ways to have more impact and improve our B Corp certification score.
The Australian B Corp community works towards reducing inequality, lowering levels of poverty, promoting and striving for a sustainable environment as well as strengthening the connection of like-minded businesses who see success as more than profit.
The theme of B Corp Month this year 'better together for a better world' captures the essence of what it means to be a B Corp and to value team wellbeing, sustainability and fairness as core functions of a thriving business.
The B Corp movement was also recognised globally with B Lab being named in Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2020, landing at #5 in the Not-for-Profit sector list. This distinction acknowledges B Lab as a global-movement organisation, driving economic systems change around the world.
