Making Australia’s co-operative economy visible.

SGS worked with the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) to design and deliver Australia’s first interactive, publicly accessible directory of the co-operative sector. Funded by the Australian Government through the Care Together program, the Australian Co-op and Mutual Directory was released in late 2025 as part of the International Year of Cooperatives.

Built from BCCM’s National Mutual Economy database, covering almost 2,000 co-operatives and mutuals, the directory translates a complex national dataset into a clear, usable tool. It brings together location, sector and organisational type in a single, map-based interface, making it easier to understand how the sector operates and where its impact is felt.

For government, industry and the sector itself, the directory provides a stronger evidence base to support policy, advocacy and investment. It helps move the conversation beyond individual organisations to a clearer picture of the co-operative economy as a whole.

SGS designed and developed the platform and continues to support its evolution. Future updates will expand the dataset, strengthen the representation of relationships across organisations, and open new ways for co-operatives to contribute information, building a more complete and accessible view of the sector over time.
