Waipā District Council | Panuku Development Auckland
Auckland and Waipā, New Zealand
Waipā District and Auckland both own and operate cemeteries.
Waipā District manages 10 main cemeteries, while Auckland operates 53 cemeteries, 30 of which are currently active and have available capacity.
SGS partnered with both Councils to complete a demand and supply network analysis of their cemeteries, assessing whether they can meet their legal obligations to provide burial space to 2050 in an affordable way for residents, aligned with community expectations.
In Waipā and Auckland, the primary methods of interment are burials and cremations. SGS modelled when each cemetery would likely reach capacity and the locations that may see shortages, along with trends in cemetery use and planning.
The remaining capacity was assessed against future needs by considering available land, existing infrastructure, and planning benchmarks using GIS spatial analysis tools. These calculations provided a clear picture of the current capacity to support long-term planning for burial services in line with legislative obligations and community needs. The recommendations included options for managing future demand.
