Quantifying community and economic benefits helps Australian Unity monitor its vision for the Herston Quarter redevelopment.

Herston Quarter (HQ) was declared a Priority Development Area by the Queensland Government in November 2016, with the intent of redeveloping the area into a mixed-use, health-related precinct. Australian Unity is the Master Developer of Herston Quarter working under a Development Agreement with land owner Metro North Health.

Australian Unity’s vision for Herston Quarter is to create “An exemplar health and innovation destination leading in collaboration, advancing wellbeing and creating vibrant community life”. When HQ is complete it will integrate public and private hospitals and complementary health and allied health facilities, along with residential and student accommodation, commercial office, retail and hospitality, childcare and car parking services. These developments will be accommodated within a quality public domain featuring significant heritage and attractive landscapes.

SGS was commissioned by Australian Unity to describe and quantify where possible:

  • Community benefits generated for the Southeast Queensland community by HQ each year as it progressively develops over time
  • Economic contribution that HQ makes to SEQ and Queensland economies as it develops, and
  • Incremental value that Australian Unity has or will deliver to HQ, the broader precinct and the broader stakeholders.
