The Tasmania JackJumpers
The Tasmania JackJumpers, established in 2020, are a professional basketball team competing in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL). Since their debut, the JackJumpers have become a symbol of pride for Tasmanians, representing the determination, passion, and talent of Australia’s smallest state.
Recognising the growing significance of the team beyond sport, the JackJumpers engaged SGS to measure the full extent of their community impact. The primary purpose of this project was to assess and quantify the economic and social contributions of the JackJumpers to the state of Tasmania.
This project employed a Social Return on Investment (SRoI) framework, a robust form of socioeconomic evaluation, to capture the benefits associated with the JackJumpers’ presence in Tasmania. The analysis extends beyond traditional economic impact measures to include the broader social value generated by the team's community engagement and outreach programs. Key benefits of the JackJumpers presence in Tasmania were found to be:
- Encouraged more people to take up basketball and lead healthy and active lifestyles.
- Ignited a deep sense of community pride and fostered greater sense of social cohesion.
- Made significant contributions to the reputation and brand value of Tasmania.
- Supported a greater tourism offering in Tasmania, attracting interstate and international visitors.
- Increased opportunities for sports fans to experience professional sport in Tasmania, boosting local business spending.
- Improved educational outcomes for children by teaching how to be healthy, active and safe.
- Fostered a strong culture of volunteering, strengthening community connection.
- Created employment opportunities within the JackJumpers organisation.
This project demonstrates the team’s value to stakeholders, supporters, and the wider community. The findings equip the JackJumpers with evidence to strengthen future strategic decisions, attract investment, and deepen community relationships.
