Tauranga is a thriving coastal city facing rapid growth and unique geographic challenges.

SGS collaborated with Tauranga City Council to establish a framework for growth, change, and development, shaping a vibrant network of urban centres across Tauranga.

SGS completed a technical assessment that placed Tauranga City within its sub-regional context, as well as the ‘split’ geography created by natural landforms that result in two main settlement areas on either side of a harbour—the ‘core’ Tauranga urban area and the Mt. Maunganui/ Papamoa ‘coast’. The geography of the region limits transport connectivity and subsequently how the network of centres function.

The report outlines the profile and characteristics of the current network of centres, as well as the scale of demand likely to occur in Tauranga over the next 20 years.

The project developed an evidence base to inform policy and deliver a clear and coherent urban structure to benefit Tauranga City and the broader sub-regional economy and community.
