Demand forecast informs school planning and investment in South East Queensland.

We worked with the Department of Education and Training in Queensland to review trends in population growth in South East Queensland. We focused on inner-city areas in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast that are characterised by high-density dwellings.

Our analysis carefully considered the shift towards apartment living in Queensland in recent years in order to determine the potential impact on school infrastructure needs.

Examining national and international trends, we uncovered the key drivers and enablers for families locating in inner-city areas. The findings indicated that families are increasingly making the trade-off between a detached house and backyard and the benefits of high-density living, such as access to employment, services and amenities.

We also forecasted the extent to which families with school-aged children will live in selected inner-city areas in the future. Mapping the results, we demonstrated the potential scale of the school infrastructure issue should a plausible change in inner-city demographics occur over the next 20 years.

Our analysis will assist the Department of Education and Training in Queensland to plan for school demand, both now and into the future.
